Youth Environmental Leadership Program

Empowering High School Scholars to Shape a Greener Future

The Youth Environmental Leadership Program (YELP) is a competitive, yearlong precollege program offered through the Institute of Environmental Research and Education at the 成人AV视频. Designed for a small cohort of high achieving high school students, YELP provides an opportunity to explore environmental science and stewardship while developing leadership skills and creating meaningful, real-world impact. Group walking on boardwalk through lush green nature preserve.

YELP is a year long-program (June-to-June). Students participate in a two day on campus orientation, attend monthly program meetings, and complete two online mini courses (digital badges) focused on environmental science and stewardship. Throughout the program, students design and complete a student led capstone project, developing college ready skills in leadership, community engagement, critical thinking, communication, and project design. Capstone projects may focus on connecting youth to nature, supporting environmental and community resilience, advancing environmental education and awareness, or addressing related environmental challenges. As a culminating academic experience, students are required to present their project through a formal poster presentation at the 成人AV视频 Environmental Student Symposium in April 2027.

In addition to their academic and project based work, YELP students serve as student ambassadors within their schools and communities, representing both the program and 成人AV视频’s broader efforts in environmental science and studies, research, and education. Select YELP students will be invited to help lead 成人AV视频’s Youth Environmental Leadership Summit (YESS) in June 2027, welcoming high school students from across Northeast Florida to the 成人AV视频 campus for a regional environmental youth symposium.

Program Overview and Outcomes

YELP is a merit-based award program designed for (rising) juniors, with preference given to IB students and students that are active members of your school's Osprey Environmental Leadership Club (if your school has one). The program will require approximately 100 hours over the year (starting and ending in June) and provides a structured pathway for students to complete their CAS projects or other community-based service projects focused on environmental issues and topics in Jacksonville.

YELP Scholars will commit approximately 100 hours over the course of a year (June-June) to environmental leadership and environmental studies and science development with the 成人AV视频 (成人AV视频). Students will work with 成人AV视频 Institute of Environmental Research and Education and with a community partner on the following: pre-college experience, environmental science/studies education and development, environmental leadership training and development, service and support of projects and initiatives, individual project development and implementation, professional presentation, and mentorship. Specific requirements can be found in Program Details.

An orientation, for the 2026-2027 cohort, is scheduled for June 1-2 at 成人AV视频. YELP students will learn about environmental leadership, sustainability, and physical and social science. Orientation will provide the opportunity to meet IERE environmental professors, students, and environmental community leaders, while becoming more knowledgeable about 成人AV视频.

Environmental CAS Project Development and Implementation

    Professional Development and Workshops

There are planned communication and development meetings to ensure student success over the course of the. year. These meetings are more frequent (weekly) earlier in the program over the development phase in the summer. These meetings can be scheduled on Zoom. Once the project is identified, meetings will be tailored based on need. There is also a required workshop on March 1, 2027 from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. on campus.

    成人AV视频’s Environmental Leadership Symposium

In April, YELP students will develop a poster presentation summarizing their CAS project and impact.  YELP students are required to attend and present their poster at 成人AV视频's Environmental Student Symposium on Friday, April 16, 2027. Please communicate with your school to ensure that this will be recognized as an excused absence. 成人AV视频 students will also be presenting their work at the Symposium as well. The Symposium is attended by approximately 150 people (IERE professors, IERE students, environmental community partners, donors, and guests). The YELP and 成人AV视频 student presentations will be a conference-style poster presentation session. YELP and 成人AV视频 students will also be recognized with an award and cords for graduation at the symposium.

    Mentoring

The last two months of the program (in May and June), YELP students will complete evaluation criteria focused on the impact of the experience on their personal and professional growth for 成人AV视频, as well as debrief with their community organization. In addition, YELP students are expected to attend the first day of the Environmental Pre-College Experience at 成人AV视频 for the incoming class of YELP students and share their experience. This will take place in early June 2027.
